Mobile phones could be banned from classrooms completely, and tight restrictions placed on using iPads as the Government today announces an inquiry into the effect of technology on pupils' behaviour.
The inquiry will be led by Tom Bennett, the Government's new behaviour tsar.
According to the Department for Education, teachers say the growing number of children bringing smartphones and tablets into class is "hindering teaching and leading to disruption".
Mr Bennett says the gadgets are currently being misused in class, with a number of pupils using them for online bullying and looking up adult content.
Brian Lightman, general secretary of the ASCL, criticised the announcement: "We do not believe it is the role of government or Ofsted to micromanage how schools address these issues which are the remit of school leaders.”
